前からReadingDrill第１８回の解説をやってます。第１６回以降は、今年のセンター英語の大問６を「マーカ抽出法」
で解いてます。今回は内容一致問題じゃなくて、設問４の下線部訳ですから、「マーカ抽出法」は使いません。
設問４　下線部を和訳しなさい。
In formal studies, professional scientists and other experts need to maintain the highest possible standards.  For research to be accepted as valid, it must not only be thorough, but also objective and accurate.  [But] Some might argue that citizen scientists cannot maintain the necessary attention to detail, or that amateurs will misunderstand the context of the investigation and make mistakes when collecting and organizing information.  In other words, can citizen science be considered truly reliable?

この下線部訳のポイントは、orやandが結ぶものを正確に訳出できるかどうかです。そう、「and、but、orが出てきたら、直後に注目して直前に同じ形（機能語）を探せ」でしたね。ただし、直後が副詞がand、but、orで結ばれることは希だから無視してもよいことが多かった。そうして見てみると、次の様な結び目が見えてきます。

or
that amateurs will misunderstand～

misunderstand the context of the investigation
and
make mistakes when collecting ～

collecting
and
organizing

つまり、一部の人間が主張するかも知れないことが２つあって、それが「ことシリーズのthat」の形で「that 文 and  that 文」。また、素人が多分やると思われることも２つあって、それがwillの直後の原形で「misunderstand and make mistakes」。最後に、それが何時かというと、現在分詞のing形で「collecting and organizing」している時。あ、最後のは「共通構文」というやつで、(a+b)xの形をしています。つまり、(collecting + organizing) informationになっていて、collectとorganizeの両方に共通する目的語がinformationだということです。この「共通構文」は京都大学の英文和訳にも良く出題されます。だから、「収集して、そして情報を整理する」じゃなくて「情報を収集し（そして）整理するとき」と訳出しなくてはなりません。

それ以外の注意点としては次の５つです。
①条件節ifのないmightだから「もしかすると」くらいを補ってやる。
②maintain our attentionで「注意力を維持する」とか「集中力を持続する」。
③to detailは「前置詞＋名詞」が副詞になっていて、「細部まで」。toは「到達点のto」でwet to the skin（ずぶ濡れになる）のtoと同じ。
④context of investigationは「研究の趣旨」くらいの意味。「脈絡」とか「文脈」ではピント来ない。
⑤when they are collecting and organizing informationのthey areが省略されている。when they collect and organize informationの分詞構文化したものとも言えるけれど、whenを残すのは希。
【全訳例】市民科学者は、細かいところまで注意力を維持することができないとか、素人は研究の趣旨を誤解していて、情報を収集し整理するときにミスを犯したりするなどと主張する人が、もしかするといるかも知れない。
