構文０４４　その他の理由・原因構文（理由・原因構文６）

理由・原因構文の最終回です。今回は、今までやった以外で、覚えておいた方が良い「理由・原因構文」を集めました。だから、全部because＋文で書き換えられます。
■人間は考えたりしゃべったりできるので、動物とは異なっている。
Human beings differ from animals in that they can think and speak.
Human beings differ from animals because they can think and speak.
in the point that＋文の省略形です。thatは「同格のthat」ですから「人間は考えたりしゃべったりできるという点において」が原義です。
■もう１０時なのだから、おいとましようと思います。
Seeing that it is 10 o’clock, I suppose we ought to leave.
Because it is 10 o’clock, I suppose we ought to leave.
これは分詞構文です。元の英文はこうです。seeは「考えてみる」の意味です。
◇１０時であることを考えてみると、おいとまするべきだと思います。
As I see that it is 10 o’clock, I suppose we ought to leave.
これと同じseeの例文を１つ挙げておきます。
◇私にできることを考えてみましょう。
I’ll see what I can do.
■もう大学を卒業したのだから、自活してゆくつもりです。
Now that I’ve graduated from college, I’ll live on my own.
Because I’ve graduated from college, I’ll live on my own.
now thatは群接続詞と呼ばれています。あ、これは藪下がそう呼んだのではなく、文法用語ですよ！群接続詞とは「２つ以上の語が集まって１つの接続詞と同じ働きをするもの」です。in thatやseeing thatも群接続詞と考えた方が簡単ですね。群接続詞now that～は「もう～なのだから」の意味になります。さて、これは前にやった群前置詞とよく似た定義ですよね。同じ意味を表す１語の接続詞と書き換えられるのも、群前置詞と同じです。
■彼は怠け者であるという理由で解雇された。
He was fired on the ground that he was lazy.
He was fired because he was lazy.
groundはグランドとかグラウンドの日本語になってます。「地面」が原義です。地面は建物の土台ですから、ある主張や結果の土台にある物、つまり「理由・原因」の意味でも使えます。このthatもやっぱり「同格のthat」ですから、「～という理由に基づいて」となります。あ、このonは前にやった「基づくon」ですね。
■風邪やら練習不足やらで、彼女は今日は満足にプレーできないだろう。
What with her cold and [what with] lack of practice, she won’t be able to play very well today.
Because of her cold and lack of practice, she won’t be able to play very well today.
このwithは「理由・原因のwith」です。withについてはここを参照してください。日本語でも「何だかんだで」とか「何やかやで」と言いますよね。英語でもやっぱり同じです。そこから、what with A and [what with] Bで「AやらBやらの理由で」の意味になります。
以上で「理由・原因構文」はお仕舞いです。今度こそ不定詞構文をやります。
