■病気だったので、僕はパーティーに出席できなかった。
Illness prevented me from attending the party.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　無生物主語構文に出てくるpreventの使い方です。「人が～するのを妨げる」の意味で「prevent人from～ing」の形で良く出てきます。fromは「禁止・抑制のfrom」です。用例を挙げておきましょう。
◇両親は僕がゲームセンターに行くのを禁止しています。
My parents prohibit me from going to game arcades.

■病気だったので、僕はパーティーに出席できなかった。
Illness prevented my attending the party.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　preventはいつも「prevent人from～ing」の形で使われるわけではありません。「～することを妨げる」の意味で「prevent人’s～ing」の形になることがあります。動名詞のことシリーズを目的語に取るわけです。

■病気だったので、僕はパーティーに出席できなかった。
Illness kept me from attending the party / my attending the party.
Illness stopped me from attending the party / my attending the party.
Illness hindered me from attending the party / my attending the party.

同じ「妨げる」の意味を持つ他動詞にkeep、stop、hinderがあります。これもpreventと同じ使い方ですから覚えておいてくださいね。

■病気だったので、僕はパーティーに出席できなかった。
Because I was ill, I couldn’t attend the party.
I couldn’t attend the party because of my illness.

「事は人が～するのを妨げる」は「事のために人は～できない」ですから、理由・原因のbecauseを使ってこんな風に書き換えられます。さて、「妨げる」の概要は一度ここで扱いました。参照してみると良いでしょうね。
