構文０５３「無生物主語構文」第２回「させない系」
■娘が病気のせいで、その父親は仕事に行けなかった。
His daughter’s sickness prevented the father from going to work.
＝The father couldn’t go to work because of his daughter’s sickness.
前回は「させる系」をやりました。「モノが人に何かさせる」の英文を和訳すると「モノのせいで、人は何かをする・しなければならない」になりましたね。今回は「させない系」です。これは「モノが人に何かをさせない」です。これを和訳するときには「モノのせいで、人は何かすることができない」とやります。例文も「自分の娘の病気が父親を仕事に行かせなかった」が「娘が病気のせいで、その父親は仕事に行けなかった」になってますね。「させない系」の仲間には他にもこんなのがあります。
■急用のために、僕は昨日来ることができなかった。
Urgent business kept me from coming yesterday.
＝Because of urgent business I could not come yesterday.
■嵐のせいで、僕は出発できなかった。
The storm stopped me from leaving.
＝Because of the storm I could not leave.
■雨のおかげで、彼らは仕事を完成させられなかった。
Rain hindered them from completing the job.
＝Because of rain, they could not complete the job.
「させない系」のstopを使うとき、米では人fromーingになるけれど、英ではfromを省略するのが普通です。fromが省略されていてもビックリしないようにしてくださいね。あ、ここに出てくるfromは「禁止・抑制・妨害のfrom」と言います。娘の病気が仕事に行くのを、急用が出発を妨害しているわけです。もともとは「そこから人を引き離す」の意味で、fromの原義から生まれたものです。「妨害」以外のfromの例文を挙げておきます。
◇喫煙を控える（抑制）
refrain [abstain] from smoking
◇子供が喫煙するのを禁止する（禁止）
prohibit children from smoking
それでは類題を解いてみましょう。
時間がなかったので、あなたに手紙を書けませんでした。
Lack ( from / me / of / prevented / time / writing ) to you.
→Lack [ of time prevented me from writing ] to you.
騒音がうるさくて、彼は一晩中眠れなかった。
The ( from / noise / night / him / all / sleeping / kept ).
→The [ noise kept him from sleeping all night ].
そうやって彼に彼女との結婚を止めさせたのですか？【from】
Is that how you stopped him ( ) getting married to her?

ってアリですか？？
おもしろい発想ですが、「ナシ」です。enableはあくまでも「できるようにする」ときに使います。
