前からReadingDrill第２１回の解説をやってます。第１６回目から、今年のセンター英語を使って「マーカ抽出法」の演習をやってます。今回も、前の続きで、「主張文」を探します。
　I find it encouraging that the list of scientific studies using citizen scientists is quickly getting longer.  [A] Still, we’re just beginning to realize the potential of citizen science.  [B] More scientists need to recognize how much volunteers can contribute to professional research.  [C] As I see it, it’s time for us to expand the old, conservative view of “science for people” to include a more democratic one of “science by people.”
設問１　「原因・理由so 主張」のSoを入れるとすると、[A]～[C]のどこか。

「理由so 主張」の論理展開を使えば、簡単に「主張文」が見つかります。その前に、先ずstillの勉強をしましょう。中学の時に習ったstillはこんな風でしたね。
⊿彼女は今もまだ怒っている。
She is still angry.

でも、大学入試には次のようなstillがよく出ます。
⊿彼女には欠点がある。それにもかかわらず、僕は彼女が好きだ。
She has her faults.  Still, I love her.
⊿その方がもっと良い。
That’s still better.

とくに「それにもかかわらず」が狙われます。stillを挟んで、左と右の内容が対立しているなら「それにもかかわらず」です。
⊿市民科学者たちを使う科学的な研究が急速に増えていることに、私は勇気づけられる思いだ。
I find it encouraging that the list of scientific studies using citizen scientists is quickly getting longer.
⊿私たちは市民科学者の可能性に気がつき始めたばかりだ。
We’re just beginning to realize the potential of citizen science.

「勇気づけられる」がプラスイメージであるのに対して、「気づいたばかりだ＝よく知らなかった」はマイナスイメージです。だから、このstillは「それにもかかわらず」です。だから、[A]にはSoなんて入りません。

今度はneed toに注目します。これは著者が何か主張しようとするときに良く使う助動詞です。こういうのを「主張の助動詞」と言います。これも「英語のロジック」に載ってます。
must (=have to)「しなくてはならない」「する必要がある」
need to「する必要がある」
should(=ought to)「するべきだ」

じゃあ、[B]にSoを入れてみましょう。
　I find it encouraging that the list of scientific studies using citizen scientists is quickly getting longer.  Still, we’re just beginning to realize the potential of citizen science. So more scientists need to recognize how much volunteers can contribute to professional research. As I see it, it’s time for us to expand the old, conservative view of “science for people” to include a more democratic one of “science by people.”

「市民科学者を利用した研究が増えてるのはうれしいことだ」それにもかかわらず「僕らは市民科学の可能性をよく知らない」だから「市民科学者がどんなに貢献できるかを評価する必要がある」

上手く行きますね。これで「主張文」がハッキリしました。あ、もしかすると、最後の文も主張だと思っている子がいませんか？だって、As I see itはI thinkと同じで「私の考えでは」くらいの意味ですから、著者が自分の意見を口にしていると考えるのも無理はありません。でも、これは最終段落の最終文です。つまり、この文は著者が最後に述べている「結論」なわけです。つまりこれは、この段落の「主張文」ではなく、文全体の「結論」なわけです。
