【講義ノート１２６】「ｗｈａｔ Ｓ＋Ｖ」
今回は、こと・ものwhatを使った重要表現「whatＳ＋Ｖ」を勉強しましょう。いくつか例を挙げておきます。
▼現在の彼
what he is now
「彼が現在そうであるところの状態」が原義です。つまり、現在の彼の人柄や人間性を言ってます。be動詞が健在形ですね。
▼１０年前の彼
what he was ten years ago
さて、今度はbe動詞が過去形になってten years agoが付いてますね。こんな風に使います。
■彼はもう５年前の彼ではない。
He is not what he was ten years ago.
＝He is not the man that he was five years ago.←「関係代名詞thatを好んで使う場合」の例文
■彼の財産
what he has
「彼が今持っているモノ」ですから、「財産」になります。
後はこれのバリエーションです。主語がいつもheなど人だとは限りません。これくらいは書けるようになっておいてください。
▼現在の日本
what Japan is now
▼５年前の日本
what Japan was five years ago
▼将来の日本のあるべき姿
what Japan ought to be in the future
それでは類題を解いて見ましょう。ま、答えは全部whatだから面白くないけどね。
