構文０９２「動詞構文」その２０「ＡはＢでできている」
■水は水素と酸素という２つの元素からできている。

consist は「成り立つ」の意味の自動詞、一方 compose や make up は「構成する＋何を」の意味の他動詞です。だから、consist は「水は成り立っている」の能動態、compose と make up は「水は構成されている」の受動態に成っています。of は off の「f」が欠落して出来た「分離の of 」が原義です。この「～から（分離する）」の意味が「～からできている」まで広がって「構成要素の of 」と言うのができあがりました。この of が３つの例文全てに用いられていますね。ちなみに、consist は他にもこんな英語が出題されます。
■幸福は単に富にあるのではない。

A consist in Bで 「ＡはＢにある」です。「Ａの本質がＢに基づいてる」という意味を表現します。この in は「所属の in」です。例えば「君は学生ですか？」を英語にすると Are you in school? と言えます。これは、君は学校組織に所属しているのか、と聞いているわけです。これがAre you in the school now?になると、「今学校の中にいるのか？」になります。school だけだと目に見えない抽象的な「学校組織」、the school になると目に見える具体的な「学校という建物」を指します。これは church－the church の関係と同じですね。

The First World War was significant in many ways.Submarines were used as a tool of war for the first time,when the Germans used them to sink British ships in 1914.Tanks were also used for the first time in battle in September 1916.They did not have a great impact at this time as they were few in number and broke down easily.However,by November 1917,they were being used much more effectively.Perhaps the greatest revolution in warfare methods,though,was the use of aircraft.At the beginning of the First World War,airplanes were still very weak,made of wood and canvas,and they were used mainly for reconnaissance,flying over enemy ground and reporting back what they had seen.The use of aircraft to drop bombs began in 1914 and,by the end of the war in 1918, about 1,400 people had been killed by bombs dropped from the air.Army commanders also began to use aircraft to spy on enemy positions and to bomb guns before they were used in ground attacks.Finally,poison gas was also used for the first time by the Germans in April 1915,killing large numbers of soldiers.

文章自体はとってもカンタンですが、びっくりするぐらい論旨の内容が薄いので36語捻出するのに苦労しました。
添削御願い致します。
先ず、「意味・意義」は複数形にはなりません。だからThe First World War had meaning in～ならＯＫです。それに「武器」の意味のarmsは銃とかナイフを指すのでsubmarinesやaircraftには使いません。また、潜水艦や飛行機など「戦争の道具」は複数あるのでa tool of warではなくtools of warにしなくてはなりません。最後にroleは可算名詞なので、played an important roleと冠詞が必要です。やっぱり名詞の加算、不可算で引っかかってますね。添削するとこうなります。
The First World War had meaning because various new weapons such as submarines, tanks, aircraft, and poison were used as tools of war for the first itme and those weapons played an important role in the war.
追伸
これで(第2文学部廃止以降の文学部の問題は)全て解き終わった事になります。
五つの大問を振り返ってみますと
1《長文単語入れ》
コレが一番苦手です。平均6割ちょっとぐらいしか合いません。
2《長文内容一致四択》
正答率は完答〜3問ミスぐらいです。ただ、スピードに難が有り、最速の年でも20分かかってしまいました。
3《長文文章入れ》
正答率は完答〜3問ミスぐらいです。ただ、スピードに絶望的な程難が有り、年によっては40分近くかけてしまった時も有るぐらいです。
4《会話文》
正答率は完答〜2問ミスぐらいです。他と比べてやけに簡単な気がします。
5《要約》
時間がかかってしまうのと、正しい英文がなかなか書けません。
まとめますと、時間の短縮を図りつつ90分の試験時間をどのように割り振るか作戦を練ると共に、1番は特に力を入れて修行をする必要が有る、と言った所でしょうか。
老師がこれを読んでいる頃私は恐らく駿台のマークを受けていますから、それから帰還したら8月以降の予定も含めてここで相談させて頂こうと思います。
これで、これからの課題がはっきりしましたね。やらなきゃならないことが見えた段階で、仕事は９０％は終わっています。後は、時間の短縮と正確さの向上だけですよ！過去問を解き込めば時間は必ず短縮されます。語彙力が増えれば正確さは増してきますよ！まだ５ヶ月もあるのですからね。
