構文０４２ 「～が理由で・原因で」のbecause（理由・原因構文４）
■急病のせいで、彼女はそのパックツアーに参加できなかった。
Because she suddenly fell ill, she couldn’t take part in the package tour.（従属）
Since she suddenly fell ill, she couldn’t take part in the package tour.（従属）
As she suddenly fell ill, she couldn’t take part in the package tour.（従属）
She couldn’t take part in the package tour for she suddenly fell ill.（等位）
やっと構文０４２です！ここでは、第４１構文でやった群前置詞の表現を、同じ意味を表す接続詞を使って書き換えるのをやります。becauseもsinceもasも使い方は全く同じです。３つとも従属接続詞ですから、＜接＋文＞と＜文＞を入れ替えて、＜文＞＜接＋文＞にすることができます。
She couldn’t take part in the package tour because she suddenly fell ill.（○）
She couldn’t take part in the package tour since she suddenly fell ill.（○）
She couldn’t take part in the package tour as she suddenly fell ill.（○）
でも、forは等位接続詞ですから、＜接＋文＞と＜文＞を入れ替えることはできません。当然、forを挟んで左右を入れ替えることもダメです。
For she suddenly fell ill, she couldn’t take part in the package tour. （×）
She suddenly fell ill, for she couldn’t take part in the package tour.（×）
ちなみに、becauseとsinceとasの違いは、あまり意識する必要はありません。参考書や英語ブログの中には「as とsinceは聞き手がすでに理由を知っているか、理由がその文であまり重要でない時に使用し、because はsince やasよりも理由に重点を置きたい時に使用する」という様なことを書いているのを見かけます。でも、そんなことを一々考えながらネイティヴはこの３つを使ってはいません！せいぜい、becauseよりもasやsinceの方がちょっと知的でカッコ良いくらいの違いです。英語学者になりたいのであれば、これらの差異を意識した方が良いのでしょうが、僕らが勉強しているのは、せいぜい大学入試の英語です！この３つの違いを出すような大学はありませんよ！
