形容詞longは時間の長さを、形容詞farは距離の長さを表しているので、下の英文は両方とも具体的に計測可能な時間や距離を述べている。
■生きている限り、あなたのご親切は忘れません。（具体的時間）
I shall never forget your kindness as long as I live.
■見渡す限り、砂漠以外何も見えなかった。（具体的距離）
As far as the eye could reach, nothing was to be seen but sand.

だからこの英文は次のように書き換えられる。
■生きている間は、あなたのご親切を忘れはしません。
I shall never forget your kindness while I live.
■視界には、砂漠以外何も見えなかった。
Within the field of view [vision], nothing was to be seen but sand.

一方、次の英文は具体的に時間や距離のことを言っているのではなく、比喩的に「条件」や「範囲」を表しているだけ。
■よい子にしている限り、外出を許可します。（比喩的時間＝条件）
You may go out as long as you are a good boy.
■僕の知る限り、彼は正直者です。（比喩的距離＝範囲）
As far as I know, he is an honest man.

これらは、実際に「よい子でいる時間」や「知識の及ぶ距離」を問題にしているわけではなく、「もし～するのなら（条件）」や「～する範囲では」の意味をlongやfarを使って比喩的に表現しているに過ぎない。

ついでに「私はどうかと言えば」の表現も一緒に覚えておくと良い。
■私はどうかと言うと、その計画には賛成できない。
As far as I am concerned, I will not approve of the plan.
As for me, I will not approve of the plan.
For my part, I will not approve of the plan.
