「free from A」と似たような表現に「free of A」というのがあります。このofは「関連のof」といって、ほとんどaboutと同じ意味です。だから「Ａに関して自由である」「Ａに関して制約がない」が原義です。従ってＡの所には「義務」「負担」「制限」なんかが来ます。あ、free of chargeはfree from chargeにすることはできません！でも、「義務」や「負担」や「制限」も「嫌なこと・もの」には違いないので、free of Aとfree from Aは混ざってしまいました。これはdie of Aとdie from Aが混ざってしまったのと同じ事情です。ですから、最近では英語の資格試験でofやfromを空所に抜くことはほとんどなくなりました。だから安心してくださいね。

These goods are free of duty.（○）
＝These goods are free from duty.（○）

⊿道路には雪がなかった。
The road was free of snow.（○）
＝The road was free from snow.（○）

税金を払う義務を免れているは本来はfree of dutyですが、今では普通にfree from dutyと言います。人の行動を制限する「雪」や「氷」にもfree ofを使います。でも「雪がない」はfree from snowと言いますが、「凍らない」はfree from iceとは言いません。まだ完全に混ざってはいないと言うことでしょう。
⊿その川は夏は凍らない。
The river is free of ice only in summer.（○）
The river is free from ice only in summer.（×）
