構文０９３「動詞構文」その２１「道に迷う」
■彼は森の中で道に迷った。
He lost himself in the woods.
He lost his way in the woods.
「道に迷う」の表現は、「たどるべき道をなくす」のか「自分自身をなくす」のかで表現します。「自分をなくす」には２つあって、「①何かに夢中になって忘我の境地に達する」場合と「②道に迷う」場合です。
◇僕はテレビゲームに夢中になって我を忘れた。
I lost myself in playing video games.
■彼は森の中で道に迷った。
He got [was] lost in the woods.
過去分詞が形容詞化すると、「完了」の意味を表現します。つまり、「結果としてそうなってしまった状態」だというわけです。loseは「なくす」や「失う」が原義ですから、それが過去分詞化して「①自分自身をなくしてしまった状態＝途方に暮れて」の意味と、「方向をなくしてしまった状態＝道に迷って」の意味の形容詞として使えます。「途方に暮れて」の例文も付けておきましょう。
◇僕は何が何だかさっぱり分かりません。
I am really lost here.
このhereは「この事で」とか「話のこの所で」くらいの意味で、これがないと「道に迷っている」のと区別がつきません。
それでは、類題を解いてみましょう。

このぶんのわやくのポイントおしえてください
和訳のポイントは次の４つです。
１．否定語が文頭に来ると疑問文型の倒置が起こる
２．関係代名詞whichの用法
３．and、but、orの直前にコンマ（,）があれば、文がそこで大きく区切れることが多い
４．同格のコンマの訳出
あとは語彙です。１つ英語が変なところは、two families either of which he or she belongs to in Romeo and Julietです。
「ロミオとジュリエットの物語の中で、彼らのどちらかが所属する２つの家族」というのは論理的に変ですね。日本人が書いた英語じゃないかなと思われます。
