「システム英語長文」がおかしいという話をしています。前回は、２Schools in the United Statesの英文の難度が高いにもかかわらずBasicに分類されているのが変だという話でした。今回は、訳語が変だという話です。全般的に変なのですが、先ずは第２段落の最終文の和訳を見てみましょう。
The underlying goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own abilities, however great or small they may be, and to give each one a sense of civic and community consciousness.
アメリカの教育の基礎となる目標は、すべての子供の能力がどれほど高くても、あるいはどれほど低くても、その能力を最大限まで伸ばすことと、それぞれに市民と地域社会の自覚を持たせることである。

「市民意識=civic consciousness」はcitizen awarenessともcivil consciousnessとも表現できます。ま、「市民の自覚」でもいいでしょう。でも、次のcommunity consciousnessは「連帯感」とか「一体感」です。これを「地域社会の自覚」とやってしまうと全くの誤訳です。それは次の段落を読めば分かります。

Because there is no national religion and because there are so many different backgrounds and origins among the people, schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country.  Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in small towns.
信奉する宗教は様々なので、また経歴や出自も様々なので、国民の結束を固め、この国に押し寄せてきた多くの移民たちを「アメリカ化」するという点で、教育は昔から重要な役割を果たしてきた。学校は地域社会、特に小さな町では今でもなお大きな役割を果たしている（この和訳は僕がやりました）。

ここで言う「地域社会」というのは、移民たちが同じ民族で固まって作る同質化した社会のことを言ってます。教育の根本的な目標は、そんな民族色の強い地域社会をアメリカ化して、アメリカ人としての一体感を深めることだと言ってます。だから、community consciousnessを「地域社会の自覚」と訳しては全然ダメです！ちゃんと「アメリカ人としての一体感」と和訳しないといけません。

まさかとは思うのですが、この変な訳語を見ているとa sense of civic and community consciousnessがa sense of civic consciousness and a sense of community consciousnessの共通項を省略して出来上がっている共通構文だということが分かってないのでしょうかね？
