「近くの家」はa near houseとは言わず「a nearby house」。
「遠くの家」はa far houseとは言わず「a faraway house」。
つまり、距離を表す場合には、nearやfarは限定用法では使えない。でも、叙述用法ではＯＫ。
The house is far from here. この家はここから遠く離れている。
The house is near by the hospital. この家は病院の側にある。
The house is near [to]the hospital. この家は病院から近い。
A is near by Bで「ＡはＢの側にある」、A is near [to] Bで「ＡはＢの近くにある」くらいの意味。toは省略されることの方が多い。
