前から、今年度の名古屋大学の下線部訳をやってます。

　In spite of being a scientist, I strongly believe an education that fails to place a heavy emphasis on the humanities is a missed opportunity.  Without a base in humanities, both the students and the democratic society these students must enter as informed citizens are denied a full view of the heritage and critical habits of mind that make civilization worth the effort.

緑の部分は前回終わってます。今回は２つの赤いandを考えています。

次に、heritageの後のandに注目します。こうなってましたね。

さて、冠詞のtheには輪郭や境目をハッキリさせるという働きがあります。ま、鉛筆で（何でもいいのですが）丸で囲んで「これ！」と言ってるようなものです。例えば、happiness（幸福）は目に見えないので、冠詞のaは付かないし、複数形にもなりません。だから、輪郭も境目もありません。だから、無冠詞、単数形が普通です。こんな具合です。
⊿私たちは幸せになるために生きている。
We live in pursuit of happiness.

でも、「幸福」にも色々あって、例えば「朝、ゆっくり寝てられる幸せ」とか「好きな時に仕事ができる幸せ」など、内容に具体性を持たせることは、境目のない「幸福」を鉛筆で区切っていって、「朝、ゆっくり寝ていられる幸せ」と「好きな時に仕事ができる幸せ」の境界線をハッキリさせることになります。これが冠詞theの働きです。
⊿私たちは愛し、愛される幸せを追い求めている。
We live in pursuit of the happiness of loving and being loved.

ということは、名詞にtheが付くと、内容が具体的になっていて、他と区別するための輪郭や境目がハッキリしているわけです。だから、the studentsとthe democratic societyは境界線で区切られた別々のものだけど、the heritage and critical habits of mindは境目のない１つものもとして扱われていることが分かります。そう思って、次のを見てください。

⊿学生たちと、その学生たちが教養ある市民として参加すべき民主主義社会

the democratic society
↑that these students must enter as informed citizens

次に、heritageの後のandに注目します。こうなってましたね。
⊿文明を受け継ぎたいという気にさせる文化遺産や批判精神

the and
・・＼critical habits of mind
・・・・↑that make civilization worth the effort

上はthe studentsとthe democratic societyは区切れてますから、関係代名詞thatの飾りはthe democratic societyにしかかかりません。一方、下はheritageとcritical habits of mindは１つながりですから、関係代名詞thatの飾りは２つにかかっています。ね！面白いでしょ。中学生でも知っているandやtheをバカにしてはいけません。さすが名古屋大学です。良くできた問題でした。
