What benefits does hosting international sporting events have?!

International sporting events such as the Olympics receive much global attention.  For example, at the closing ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Japanese original animation was introduced to show the advanced stage of Japan’s modern technology.  Through the Olympic it’s possible for the big companies to provide technologies.  Certainly there are disadvantages by holding the Olympics.  Some people would agree that hosting is too expensive.  However this opinion ignores the long-term benefits.  By holding Olympics, tourism increases during the time of games, which brings the host country more tourism-related revenue.  With proper planning and precautions, it’s clear that the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages.

「オリンピックを主催することによる不利益」は日本語として成立します。「～による」だからbyでもよい気もしますがdisadvantage by Aという表現はありません。英語は「Ａにとって不利なこと」と発想して、disadvantage to Aのようにtoで不利益を被る対象を指差します。こんな具合です。
⊿家が貧乏であることは彼にとって大きなハンディーだった。
His poverty was a great disadvantage to him.

同じような発想で、不利益を被る対象は「人」だけでなく「こと」や「もの」でもかまいません。こんな具合です。
⊿オリンピックを主催することにとって不利な点がいくつかある。
There are disadvantages to holding the Olympics

要するに、指を差して「これのデメリット」とか「この人の不利な点」と言ってるわけです。「よく分からない場合は、「こと」を「人」に替えてみることです。成り立てば不利益を被る対象です。ま、普通は「オリンピックを主催するデメリット」と言います。日本語に引きずられないように注意しないといけません。

さて、ここで注意して欲しいのは、「オリンピックを主催すること」は不利益の「内容」ではないということです。もし「不利益」や「デメリット」の内容を言いたい時は「同格のof」を使ってこうします。

He has the advantage of being able to speak English.
⊿女性が独身でいるデメリットは、経済的に自分で自分を支えないといけないことです。
A disadvantage of women’s being single is that they have to stand on their own feet economically.

「英語が話せること＝メリット」、「女性が独身でいること＝デメリット」の関係が成り立ってます。
