Nuclear power is necessary for Japan’s economic future. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
答案
I disagree with this statement. First, if nuclear power plant accidents happen, we will suffer much harm. For example, the Fukushima No.1 power plant accident made people move away and brought damage caused by rumors and environmental pollution. Second, there is still no established way to finally dispose of nuclear waste and we have to manage it for a long time, costing a lot of money. Some people may say that nuclear power is a low-cost power but I think nuclear power that has risks and costs a lot of money is not good power in the long run. So I think nuclear power is unnecessary for Japan’s economic future.

岩間君！あ、これは本当は鈴村君の答案です。とても良く書けていると思います。今日のポイントは「英作文で付帯状況分詞構文は絶対に使わない」です。
「沢山の費用をかけて放射線廃棄物を長期間管理しないといけません」ですから、付帯状況分詞構文で「, costing a lot of money」としても間違っていない気がしますよね。
先ず、付帯状況分詞構文の主語は、直前文の主語と一致します。だから、これを分詞構文を使わずに書くとこうなります。
⊿私たちは沢山の費用をかける（？）
We cost a lot of money.
ここで気がつかないといけないのは、costが物主語しかとらないということです。忘れた子はここ参照しておいてください。ということは、この付帯状況は成り立たないということです。英作文で分詞構文を使うと、こういうことがよく起こります。ですから、分詞構文はできるだけ避けてand、but、becauseなどの接続詞でつなぐのがよいでしょう。こんな具合です。
⊿私たちは廃棄物を長い間管理しないといけません。そして、それには沢山のお金がかかります。
We have to manage nuclear waste for a long time, and it costs a lot of money.

後ろから修飾されている名詞の代名詞はみんなthatという認識でよいですか？
