以下の設問（Ａ）（Ｂ）の中から１つ選んで、問題文Ⅰ～Ⅲをもとにして、自分の意見を解答用紙ＢのⅤ欄に英語で書きなさい。
(A) Should the Japanese government introduce quotas for the number of women in government and business? Why, or why not?
(B) Should the Japanese government encourage more foreigners to settle in Japan?  Why, or why not?

答案
（Ｂ）In my opinion, the Japanese government should encourage more foreigners to settle in Japan.  As Betty Stayput states in her article, “the temporary solution of replacing people in aging societies with young people from elsewhere is simply a dead end”(paragraph 7).  It’s true that we should think better before moving to act.  Yet what we can do is confront the problems such as labor shortages we face now.  I think it’s not thinking but moving to act that counts.  Accepting more foreigners would lead us to unexpected good results.

岩間君！あ、本当は林直希君の答案なのですが、内容自体はちょっと乱暴ですが、英語は良く書けていますよ。駿台の基本英文７００選の暗記も無駄じゃなかったことが分かります。

さて、今日の添削のポイントは「行動に移す前によく考える」です。林君は「think well」を「深くじっくりと考える」の意味で使ってますが、think wellにはそんな意味はありません。think wellやthink illは何かをよく思ったり悪く思ったりするときに使う表現です。こんな具合です。
⊿あたしは彼のことを善い人[悪い人]だと思った。
I thought well [ill]of him.

これは「褒める」や「悪口を言う」と同じです。
⊿彼女はいつも君のことを褒めてる。
She always speaks well of you.
⊿彼女はいつも君の悪口を言っている。
She always speaks ill of you.

そして、think better of itという表現もあるのですが、このbetterは名詞で「もっとましなこと」くらいの意味で使っています。こんな具合です。
⊿考え直してもらえませんか。
I hope you will think better of it.

「そのことについて、もっとましなことを考えてはもらえないか」が「考え直してもらえませんか」になってます。このbetterは林君も知っているあの表現に出てくるbetterと同じです。
⊿そんなことをするほどバカじゃないよ。
I know better than to do so.

だから、think betterに「深くじっくり考える」の意味はありません。いつも言ってることですが、英作文は中学生でも分かる英語で書くのが基本です。ここはこうするのが善いでしょう。
⊿行動に移す前にもっとよく考えなさい。
You should think [about it] more [carefully] before you move into action.

だから、答案もbetterをmoreにすれば正しい英語になります。
⊿確かに行動に移す前によく考えなくてはなりません。
It is true that we should think more before moving to act.
