二茅くんからの質問・「クジラの公式・変則パターン」（３）
これは１９９３年度・岐阜大の長文からの引っ張ってきました。
Strange as it may seem to Westerners who think of Japan as the Mecca of modern technology, some 50,000 fortune-tellers are operating a booming industry with tools no more advanced than a crystal ball. Their clients’ backgrounds cover a broad spectrum, ranging from executives seeking business advice and politicians worried about electoral futures to women in search of Mr. Right. Many bookstores are stocking special shelves with works on the occult, and at least one fortune-teller, Kazuko Hosoki, a former nightclub owner, has reached the heights of bestsellerdom; her compatibility and incompatibility, an astrological look at human relations has sold 880,000 copies, a best seller by Japanese standards.
下線部冒頭部のasは「譲歩のas」です。

下線部もこれと同じようにthoughを使って書き換えられます。

A seem BがA is Bの第２文型だということ、think of A as Bが「AをBだと考える」だということは説明不要でしょう。operateを「運転する」とか「操作する」と訳すと変です。
⊿約５万人の占い師が道具を使って流行の産業を展開している。
Some 50,000 fortune-tellers are operating a booing industry with tools no more advanced than a crystal ball.
a booming industryが単数形であることを考えると、「占い産業」くらいの意味だと分かります。だから、「人気の占いビジネスを展開している」と訳出すると良いでしょう。
さて、ポイントはtoolsの後ろの「クジラ構文」です。
⊿水晶のような時代遅れの道具
tools no more advanced than a crystal ball
２語以上の長い飾りは名詞の後ろに付きました。こんな具合です。
⊿僕には大きすぎる帽子
a hat too big for me
この「クジラ構文」も２語以上の形容詞として後ろからtoolsを飾っているわけです。そして「クジラ構文」は「AがBじゃないのはCがBでないのと同じだ」ですから、「水晶玉と同じくらい時代遅れの道具」と訳出するところですが、こうすると占い師が使っている道具に水晶玉が含まれないことになってしまいます。このtoolsの中には当然crystal ballも含まれますから「水晶玉と同じくらい時代遅れの道具」ではなくて「水晶玉のような時代遅れの道具」とやってやります。ね！面白いでしょ！全訳を付けておきます。
日本のことを現代科学術のメッカ（中心地）と考えている西洋人には奇妙に思われるかも知れないが、約５万人の占い師が水晶玉のような時代遅れの道具を使って流行の産業を展開している。
