＜質問＞
これは昨日受験した「第１回・ベネッセ・駿台マーク模試」、大問３(B)の『不要文指摘問題』です。
Grape-growing involves all four seasons, each with vital jobs.  During the winter, grape vines lose their leaves and it’s time to cut the vines.  This can improve the quality of the fruit in the following months.  ①Spring is mostly a waiting time until the new green buds appear in the next season.  ②You can enjoy these beautiful green buds and feel  refreshed when you see them.  ③As it warms up through the seasons, the vines grow longer with more buds.  ④If there are too many, they are removed so that more energy can go into the fruits.  When it starts to cool down again, the ripe and juicy grapes are ready to be picked.  This marks the end of a one-year cycle.

この問題の不要文は②で、「具体文のふりをしている文」です。でも、先生は前にここで「具体例のふりをするのは難しいので、大体が理由のふりをしている文を探せば良い」と言ってました。第２ルールには例外があるということでしょうか？

稲熊君！なかなか痛いところをついてきますね。これは君の言うとおりで、この問題は「主張文」と「具体例」でしか構成されていないので、不要文が「理由のふりをしている文」であるはずがありません。まさか具体例だけで問題を構成するとは思っても見ませんでした。だって、具体文ばかりなら、不要文なんて簡単にみつかってしまいますからね。

２文から、「それぞれの季節」の仕事が具体的に説明されています。先ずは冬の季節から。
[具体１]＝冬の間に、ブドウのツルから葉が落ちるので、ツルを切る時期だ。
[具体２]＝このお陰で、この先果実の質が高まる。

次は春。
[具体３]＝春は、夏に新芽が出るまで待ってる時期だ。
[具体４]＝緑の新芽を愛でていると、気分が良くなる。

次は夏
[具体５]＝春、夏を通して気温が上がって来ると、ツルが伸びてたくさんの芽が出てくる。
[具体６]＝芽が多すぎるなら摘み取って、特定の果実に栄養が行くようにする。

最後にもう１度冬、そして結論と続きます。
[具体７]＝また寒くなり始めると、熟して果汁あふれるブドウを摘み取る時期だ。
[結論]＝こうして１年の仕事が終わる。

あ、どうでも良いことですが、問題が間違ってます。

このthrough the seasonsが指している具体的な「季節」って何ですか？もしかしてspring and summerのこと？だったら、直前にSpring is a waiting time until the new green buds appear in the next seasonとあるので、with more budsと矛盾します。もしかして、summerのつもりでthe seasonsと書いたのなら、複数形の-sを取らないとダメ。それにthe seasonsと聞くと思い浮かべるのはfour seasonsの方ですから、これもおかしい。それに、「解答・解説」の和訳も変です。
⊿この季節の間じゅう気温が上がってくるにつれて、つるは長くなりより多くの芽が出てくる。

「この季節」というと、「春」とか「夏」など、単一の季節を指します。もし「春と夏」を指したければ「この時期を通して気温が上がってくる」としないといけません。ベネッセさん！駿台さん！大丈夫ですか？

さて、問題は簡単で、テーマが「ブドウ栽培でそれぞれの季節にやるべき仕事」なのですから、それとは関係のない「具体４」が不要文だとすぐに分かります。理由文のふりをしていると、主張を裏付ける理由としては「①大げさすぎる」、「②一部分しか裏付けていない」、「③主張を勝手に展開している」、「④そんなことは理由にならない」の４つを考えなくてはなりません。でも、具体文のふりをしていると、書いてある内容が具体的なので、なかなか上手にウソがつけないのです。だから、「具体例のふりをするのは難しい」のです。この問題はベネッセさんの大サービス問題だったんですよ。
