今回からReadingDrill第６回の解説をやります。先ず「テーマの見つけ方」です。ついでに「主張文の見つけ方」も一緒にやってしまいます。主張文がハッキリしている場合には、その中にテーマとなる名詞が必ず含まれています。だから、先ず主張文を見つけるのがテーマを探す早道です。今回の英文は for instance や for example ここに注目すれば、簡単に主張文が見つけられます。
There have been 44 presidents of the United States.  Some are remembered as courageous heroes who led the nation through grave crisis.  For instance, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, and Franklin Roosevelt, the 32nd, are revered today for guiding the country through the Civil War and World War Ⅱ, respectively.  Others are remembered less fondly for the crisis they failed to resolve.  Herbert Hoover, for example, who easily won the 1928 election, had the misfortune of becoming president just several months before the disastrous stock market crash of 1929. 

「客観的事実」や「一般的な意見」と対立する様に次で「主張」が述べられ、さらに次でそれを裏付けるための「理由」や「具体例」が述べられるのが、英語の一般的なロジック（論理展開）でした。忘れた子はここを参照しておいてくださいね。すると、「今までに４４人の合衆国大統領がいた」という客観的事実に続いて、「重大な危機の中をアメリカを導いた勇敢なヒーローとして記憶される大統領も中にはいる」という主張が展開されます。そして、For instanceに導かれて、第１６代大統領のアブラハム＝リンカーンと第３２代大統領のルランク林＝ルーズベルトの具体例が始まります。

ということは、Some are remembered as courageous heroes who led the nation through grave crisis.が主張文です。主張は「ＡはＢだ」や「ＡがＢした」で展開され、その中の「Ａ」がテーマです。ですから、Some(presidents of the United States)がテーマだと分かります。そして、もうちょっと読み進むとまたfor exampleが出てきます。ということはその直前に主張文があるはずです。つまり、Others are remembered less fondly for the crisis they failed to resolve.も主張文ってことです。だったら、Others(=other presidents of the United States)もテーマだと分かります。

すると、今回の英文には２つの主張文が出てきて、その中のpresidents of the United Statesがテーマだということになります。このsome⇔othersの対立はとても重要です。someが出てきたら、othersを探して本文を読み進むことです。
