In the history of how the dog came in from the cold, we seem to give ourselves a little too much credit. The most common ( ) is that some hunter-gatherer with a soft spot for cuteness found some wolf puppies and adopted them. Over time, these tamed wolves would have shown their prowess at hunting, so humans kept them around the campfire, until they evolved into dogs.
But when we look back at our relationship with wolves throughout history, the hunting hypothesis, that humans used wolves to hunt, doesn’t hold up. Humans were already successful hunters without wolves, more successful than every other large carnivore. Wolves eat a lot of meat, as much as one deer per ten wolves every day. They must have been the rival for our ancestors to compete against. And anyone who has seen wolves in a feeding frenzy finds that wolves don’t like to share.

・hold upの訳出に注意してください。
「手を上げろ！」のイメージから次のように意味が広がります。

①両手を挙げて支える→支持する→（支持できるくらい）真実味がある、説得力がある
②ずっと支えてる→持続する、維持する→持ちこたえる、耐える
③両手を挙げさせておく→停止させる、足止めする→（そうしておいて）奪う、盗む

ここではテーマが「仮説」ですから「支持する」「説得力がある」の意味だと推測します。ちなみに、creditの意味の広がりも覚えておくと良いでしょう。

①「立派な行い」＝誇れること、誇れるもの、功績
②「立派な行いによって得られるもの」→称賛、評判、名声、信用→信用取引（クレジットカード）
③「立派な行いが与える」→影響力、威光
④「行いに与えられるもの」→（大学で科目を一定時間履修すると与えられる）単位
⑤「銀行との取引行為（引き落とし）の結果」→残高
give oneself creditで「自分を称賛する」から「 自分の手柄にする」くらいの意味になります。
