In the history of how the dog came in from the cold, we seem to give ourselves a little too much credit. The most common assumption is that some hunter-gatherer with a soft spot for cuteness found some wolf puppies and adopted them. But when we look back at our relationship with wolves throughout history, the hunting hypothesis, that humans used wolves to hunt, doesn’t hold up. Humans were already successful hunters without wolves, more successful than every other large carnivore. Wolves eat a lot of meat, as much as one deer per ten wolves every day. They must have been the rival for our ancestors to compete against. And anyone who has seen wolves in a feeding frenzy finds that wolves don’t like to share.
訳出のときのポイントを何回かに分けて説明しておきます。
・下線部にthatが出てきたら、それが地雷です。この「that＋文」は文が完全文だから「従属接続詞のthat（ことシリーズ）」か「同格のthat」。挿入のコンマを消して考えると「A that B」が「BというA」になり、「こと」の訳語は付かないので「同格」だと分かります。訳出は「①挿入」でもいいし、「②同格」の「BというA」でもどちらでも良いです。つまり、
①＝狩猟仮説は、人間が狩りをするためにオオカミを利用したというものだが、説得力がない。
②＝人間が狩りをするためにオオカミを利用したという狩猟仮説は、説得力がない。
