先ずは単語！・名古屋大学（２）
前回から、今年度の名古屋大学の下線部訳を考えてます。
In spite of being a scientist, I strongly believe an education that fails to place a heavy emphasis on the humanities is a missed opportunity. Without a base in humanities, both the students and the democratic society these students must enter as informed citizens are denied a full view of the heritage and critical habits of mind that make civilization worth the effort.
緑の部分は前回終わってます。今回は２つの赤いandを考えましょう。先ず、both A and Bのandが作るキレイな対称形に注目します。こんな具合です。

and

次に、heritageの後のandに注目します。こうなってますね。

the and
・・＼critical habits of mind
上のandは２つの「the名詞」を結んでいますが、下のandはtheを共有している２つの「名詞」を結んでいます。どうして上にはtheが２つあって、下には１つしかないのか分かりますか？ヒントはそれぞれのA and Bの後ろに付いている関係代名詞の飾りです。
⊿この学生が教養ある市民として参加しなければならない××。
×× [that] these students must enter as informed citizens
⊿文明を引き継ぎ次世代に伝える価値あるものにする××。
×× that make civilization worth the effort
××のところには先行詞が来ます。さて、それぞれの先行詞は何でしょうか？つまり、that文が飾っているのは何でしょうか？答えは次回です。
