先ずは単語！・名古屋大学（１）
今回は、今年度の名古屋大学の下線部訳をやってみましょう。
In spite of being a scientist, I strongly believe an education that fails to place a heavy emphasis on the humanities is a missed opportunity. Without a base in humanities, both the students and the democratic society these students must enter as informed citizens are denied a full view of the heritage and critical habits of mind that make civilization worth the effort.
ポイントはandが結ぶものが分かるかどうかです。そして、もう１つが多義語のhumanityとdenyです。humanityを「人間性」、denyを「否定する」としか覚えてない子は名古屋大学には合格できません。え？そんなの知らないって？いいえ！『システム英単語』の第５章、「多義語のBrush Up」にちゃんと出てきますよ！

１．人類の将来＝the future of humanity
２．自然科学と人文科学＝science and the humanities
＊2はtheと複数形に注意。

□deny
１．神の存在を否定する＝deny the existence of God
２．女性に平等な権利を与えない＝deny women equal rights
ほらね！両方ともちゃんと載ってます。このdenyは「誰に＋何を」の第４文型で使います。つまり「与えない＋誰に＋何を」です。「誰に」を主語にして受け身にすると名古屋大学の下線部と同じ形になります。
２．女性は平等な権利を与えられない＝Women are denied equal rights.
さて、これだけのことを頭に置いて和訳してゆきましょう。先ずは文頭副詞から。
⊿人文科学の基礎がなければ
without a base in humanities
inは「視点・観点のin」で、in humanitiesで「人文科学の点における」の意味の形容詞です。直前のa baseを飾っていて、「ルール１６」のETタイプの５と同じです。
⊿机の上の本
a book on the desk
「人文科学の点における基礎」でもいいのですが、もっと簡単に「人文科学の基礎」でかまいません。続きは次回です。シス単の売りは第５章の多義語ですから、ここは真っ先に覚えてくださいね。
