Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A zoo has no useful purpose. Use specific reasons and examples to explain your answer.

I disagree with this statement.  Some people say that a zoo needs a lot of money and it is a waste of money.  But I would say that a zoo has some important roles.  First, not only children but also adults can enjoy a zoo.  Watching animals closely is very amazing and learning about animals which live in foreign countries is very meaningful.  Second, nowadays many people worry about the fact that many animals are exposed to extinction by increasing global warming.  A zoo may contribute to keeping endangered animals from extinction.  So I believe that a zoo has some useful purposes.

needの使い方
needを使うときには主語に注意が必要です。先ず、人主語の場合にneedは助動詞にもなり、他動詞にもなります。
■人主語で一般動詞
You need to go.
Do I need to go?
You don’t need to go.

needが一般動詞の時、疑問文と否定文が間延びして、言い切るまでに時間がかかるのが分かりますか？needは結構差し迫った状況で使われるので、一般動詞は使い勝手が悪いわけです。その点、助動詞needの方が使いやすい。
■人主語で助動詞
You need go.
Need I go?
You needn’t go.

ほらね！短い分、すぐに言いたいことが相手に伝わります。注意すべきは、助動詞needを肯定文では使えないと言うことです。次に、物主語の場合のneedはどうでしょうか

■物主語で一般動詞
My house needs to be repaired.
My house needs repairing.

物主語の場合には、needは２つの形の目的語しかとれません。１つは動名詞、もう１つはto be過去分詞の不定詞です。文法の問題ではおなじみの例文ですよね。

さて、答案のneedはzooが主語ですから「物主語で一般動詞」の用法になります。
⊿動物園はたくさんのお金がかかる。
A zoo needs a lot of money.（×）

目的語のa lot of moneyは動名詞でも不定詞の名詞用法でもありません。ですからこの文脈ではneedは使えないことが分かります。ここではneedではなくてrequireを使うのが賢明です。

A zoo requires a lot of money.（○）
