「セミコロン＋副詞」の「; for example」を説明したばかりのところで、とてもタイムリーな記事が『アエラ』に載っていました。Ｎｏ．３６に連載されている「厚切りジェイソン・厚切りビジネス英語」の英文です。こんな具合です。
In the field of education there are many urgent problems: for example, bullying, the overworking of teachers, and so on. The Japanese education system is approaching a turning point in its history.
教育現場では喫緊の問題が山積している。例えば、いじめや教師の過労などだ。日本の教育システムは 歴史的な転換点を迎えようとしている。
ジェイソンさんも「コロン＋for example」を使ってしまってますね。コロン（:）とセミコロン（;）はよく似ているのでネイティヴでも間違えます。だから僕ら日本人は絶対使っちゃダメです。
え？ジェイソンは大学に１７歳で飛び級入学した秀才だから、「コロン＋for example」は正しいんじゃないかって？そういうのを「劇場のイドラ」と言うのですよ！ま、ジェイソンさんはただのお笑い芸人で、言葉の権威じゃないけどね！あ、フランシス＝ベーコン知らなければ、大学に行っても時間とお金の無駄ですよ。
分かりました。それでは、英語で記事を書いてる世界中の新聞記者が聖典として使ってる文法書、『The Chicago Manual of Style』でセミコロンの使い方を調べてみましょう。薮下が使っているのは15th editionです。

６．６１セミコロンの使い方
“that is”やそれに類似した同格表現とともに使う
セミコロンはthat isやnamelyの様な表現の前で使う。６．４４も参照のこと。

６．４４同格表現（that is, namely, for example, or, やそれに類似した表現）
２つのコンマで挟む。that isの様な同格表現は普通はコンマに続けて使う。また、同格表現はコンマ、エムダッシュ、あるいはセミコロンに続けて使われ可能性もある。場合によっては、挿入したい１文が( )や―で挟まれることもある。orが「言い換えると」の意味で使われる場合には、直前にコンマが来る。
⊿キスラはなんとか話題を変えた。すなわち、彼はまったく別の問題を引き合いに出したのだ。

言うまでもないと思いますが、for exampleもthat is [to say]と同じ「同格表現」ですから、that isと使い方は同じです。ま、ウソを教えるくらいなら、Z会の『自由英作文編・英作文のトレーニング』の成田あゆみさんも、ジェイソンさんも英語を教えない方がいいんじゃないですか？！
