二茅くんからの質問・クジラの公式・変則パターン（２）
これは２００１年度・名古屋大学の長文から引っ張ってきました。
Are all arranged marriages successful? No more than all romantic marriages are. But, ultimately, what makes a marriage work is not how it began but what you do with it. Mutual respect, realistic expectations and a willingness to compromise may, in the long run, be more important than all the undying promises made in moments of passion. Marriage is a long race: it is learning the other’s gait as you go. What matters is whether you are able to find a common rhythm.
普通はno more than＝onlyです。こんな具合です。
⊿ここから車でたった５分の距離だ。
It is no more than five minutes from here by car.
＝It is only five minutes from here by car.
でも、下線部のno more thanをonlyにしても意味不明です。
No more than all romantic marriages are.
？？Only all romantic marriages are.
実はこれも「クジラ構文」で、前文の「全ての見合い結婚は上手く行くのであろうか」という内容を受けて、下線部につながるのですが、同じ内容の繰り返しを避けるために省略が起こっているのです。
⊿全ての恋愛結婚がそうである（上手く行くとは限らない）ように、全ての見合い結婚が上手く行くとは限らないのだ。
All arranged marriages are no more successful than all romantic marriages are.
ね！いい問題でしょ！not allが部分否定になっていることにも注意してください。
