次の問題は２００９年度、産業医科大の自由英作文です。
＜問題＞
次の指示に従って、１００語程度の英語を書きなさい。
It is often said that international sports events, such as the Olympics and World Championships, contribute to international understanding and world peace.  Do you agree or disagree with that opinion?  Give reasons for your opinion.

＜答案＞
I agree that international events contribute to international understanding and world peace.  This is partly because we can learn foreign people and culture through these events, and we can help foreign people learn our own culture.  Thus, this will lead to international understanding.  This is partly because a country can get a chance to make friends with other countries which have conflicted with the country.  The country shouldn’t rely on only international events in order to make friends with other countries, but this will surely lead to world peace step by step.

乾くん！あ、本当は加藤くんで、２度目の登場です。仲の良くない国も、オリンピックやワールドカップを通して仲良くなれるかも知れないと考えるところから、君の優しさが伝わってきます。薮下なんか、宗教と民族がなくならない限り、皆が仲良くなんてなれないと思ってますからね。さて、今回の添削ポイントは「１．learn Aとlearn about Aの違い」と「２．”仲が悪い”の表現」の２つです。

１．learn Aとlearn about Aの違い
learnは自動詞にも他動詞にもなるのですが、意味が全く違います。
⊿僕は新しい技術を習得した。
I learned a new technology.
⊿僕は新しい技術について学んだ。
I learned about a new technology.

上の方は技術を身につけて、それが使えるようになったと言ってます。一方、下はその技術についての情報を手に入れたと言ってます。だから、下の方では人はその技術を使いこなすことは出来ません。

ここでの「自国の文化を学ぶ」や「外国人とその文化を学ぶ」というのは、それについての知識や情報を手に入れるということですから、learn Aじゃなくてlearn about Aの方を使います。

２．「仲が悪い」の表現。
「仲が悪い」のが人間同士であればこうなります。
⊿僕はあいつと仲が悪い。
I do not get along with him.
I am on bad terms with him.

conflictを人に使うと、「考え方や意見が合わない」の意味に成ります。
⊿僕は彼といつも意見が合わない。
His views come in conflict with mine.
His views conflict with mine.

でも、国家間でconflictを使うと「長期的な戦闘状態」の意味に成ります。こんな具合です。
⊿２国間で紛争が勃発した。
A conflict broke out between the two countries.

戦争をやってる国がオリンピックやワールドカップを通して仲が良くなることはありません。だから、ここではconflictは使えません。あ、ちなみに国家間の紛争を表現するのに、conflictを動詞で使うことはできません。ま、使えない動詞は英作文では使わないのが賢明です。じゃあ、国家間で戦争はしてないまでも、ちょっと仲が悪いことをどう表現するかというと、A have differences with Bを使います。
⊿日本はアメリカと仲が悪い。
Japan has differences with the United States.

have differencesは「色んな点で考え方の違いがある」くらいの意味で、「一悶着ある」とか「揉めている」くらいの日本語に当たります。これは国家間だけでなく人間にも使えますし、中学生でも知っている単語で出来上がっているので、覚えておくと便利です。

This is partly because we can learn about foreign people and culture through these events, and we can help foreign people learn about our own culture. This is partly because a country can get a chance to make friends with other countries which it has differences with.
