次の問題は２０１１年度、産業医科大の自由英作文です。
＜問題＞
次の指示に従って、１００語程度の英語を書きなさい。
  In Europe and North America, “anime” and “manga” have become representative of modern Japanese culture.  Do you think that these are good representatives?  Explain your opinion.

＜答案＞
  I think that “anime” and “manga” are good representatives.  This is because many foreign people will come to Japan if they get interested in “anime” and “manga.”  This will enable us to develop our own culture and economy, and we will get a chance to have contact with foreign people and culture.  However, we will have to be careful with differences between our culture and foreign cultures.  It is natural that one culture is different from other cultures because countries are different.  Thus, it is important to respect each other without denying the values of each other.

乾くん！あ、本当は加藤くんなのですが、アニメや漫画が日本文化を代表すのかという発問に対して、お互いの文化の尊重へ話を持ってゆくところはさすがですね。英語も内容も良く書けています。今日の添削のポイントは「１．careful withとcareful aboutの違い」と「２．A of Bの使い方」の２つです。

１．careful about Aとcareful with A
careful about Aもcareful with Aも両方とも日本語にすると「Aに注意する」になるのですが、注意の仕方が違います。
⊿割れ物の扱いには注意してください。
Be careful with breakable stuff.
⊿健康には注意してくださいね。
Be careful about your health.

「注意してください」の訳語が両方に付いていますが、careful withは「取り扱いに注意する」、careful aboutは「大切にする・気を配る」の注意するです。careful with moneyになると「金遣いに慎重になる」とか「金銭に細かい」の意味を表現します。だからwithの後ろには壊れやすいものやお金が、aboutの後ろには配慮が必要なもの全般が来ます。

ここでは「自国と他国の文化の差異に注意する」という文脈ですから、「割れ物」ではなくて「気を遣うべきもの」の方のaboutを使います。

２．A of Bの表現に注意。
僕ら日本人がA of Bを使うと、だいたい失敗します。a cup of coffeeの「単位・数量・種類のof」は別にして、それ以外のA of Bは極力使わないようにしましょう。次のofは「Ｂの持つ」の所有格のofですが、上は良くても下はいけません。

the values of each other（×）

企業価値は良くて、お互いの価値がなぜいけないのかというと、companyはモノ、each otherは人だからです。人が所有している様子は基本的にアポストロフィを使ってこう表現します。

良く分からなくなったら、中学生でも使える関係代名詞に逃げればOKです。
