やっと時間ができたので、ReadingDrill第２３回の解説を再開します。今回は設問４の内容一致問題をやりましょう。

What is the author’s main reason for raising the example of Nauru in this paragraph?
１．To argue that environmental destruction is an inevitable result of migration.
２．To argue that on a global scale, foreigners will abandon polluted places.
３．To explain that access to easy migration encourages environmental destruction.
４．To explain that profits based on short-term thinking can lead to migration.

この設問文、「この段落で、著者がﾅｳﾙの例を引いたのはどういうわけか？」からマーカを抽出するのはちょっと難しいですね。なぜなら、これは「true or NOT trueタイプ」の設問だからです。あ、「true or NOT trueタイプ」を忘れた子はここを参照してください。ですから、すべての選択肢からマーカを抽出します。こんな具合です。

ここでもまた慶応の得意な「原因・結果」の選択肢が登場します。そこでもう１度「原因・結果の表現」を復習しておきましょう。赤い矢印の向きに注意してください。
「Ａが原因でＢが起こる」（Ａ→Ｂ）
A result in B（Ａは結果としてＢをもたらす）
A lead to B（ＡはＢにつながる）
A cause B（ＡはＢを引き起こす）
A encourage B（ＡはＢを促す）
A drive B（ＡはＢを促す）

「Ｂが原因でＡが起こる」（Ａ←Ｂ）
A is the result of [from] B

ポイントは「結果のin」と「理由・原因のfrom」でしたね。つまり、inは「因→果」でfromは「因←果」です。toは見ての通り→、他動詞cause、encourage、driveは「引き起こす」とか「促進させる」なので「因→果」になります。さて、先ずは選択肢の１と３を考えましょう。だって、両方の選択肢にはenvironmental destructionとmigrationが出てくるからです。
１．「environmental destruction果 ← 因migration」
３．「migration因 → 果environmental destruction」

一見すると真逆のように見えますが、１には「理由・原因のof」、３には「促進させるencourage」があるので、２つとも「移民が原因で環境破壊が起こる」と言ってます。ということは１が正解なら３も正解になってしまうので、１も３も不正解だと分かります。同じ内容の選択肢があれば、両方とも不正解だということです。こういう風に頭を使うことが大切ですよ。

では、ちゃんとマーカを抽出しておきましょう。environmental destructionとmigrationのマーカが段落冒頭文にヒットします。
⊿環境破壊は移民を多く促進させてきた。
Environmental destruction has driven much migration.

これは「環境破壊が意味を促進する」といっているので、やっぱり１や３とは全く同じだと分かります。長くなったので、２の選択肢は次回考えます。
