前からReadingDrill第１５回の解説をやっています。今回は、設問３の下線部訳の解説をやります。
Today hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the country and around the world make the trip to this tiny village each year in order to kiss the Blarney Stone.  [But] kissing the stone is no easy task.  [Because] it is set high in the castle wall.  Visitors must first climb the long steps to the top of the wall.  Then, in order to reach the stone they must lie on their backs on the walkway above it and lean over backwards while an attendant holds their legs to prevent them from falling.  Now there are warning signs, for in the past, several unfortunate visitors have fallen to their deaths as they tried to kissed the stone.  Still, the prize is worth the danger, for it is said that once it is kissed the stone grants to that individual the gift of eloquence.

先ず、第14回の和訳でポイントになっていたyetや、今回のstillは、下線部に出てきたら要注意です。これは「中学生でも知っているのに意外な意味がある単語」だからです。stillは副詞で「①今でも」「②それでも」「③さらに」の３つの意味を覚えておいてください。
⊿彼は今でも怒っている。
He is still angry.
⊿彼には欠点があるが、それでもあたしは彼が好きだ。
He has his faults. Still, I love him.
⊿さらに別の話にはそう書いてある。
Still another story says that.

下線部のstillは文頭で接続詞の様に使っているので、「②それでも」の逆接だと分かります。

次に「, for～」の訳出です。forには色んな意味があるのですが、直前にコンマがあれば接続詞で「なぜなら」の意味の「理由のfor」にしかなれません。どうしてかというと、コンマは文をそこで強制的に区切る働きがあるので、「for＋名詞」が前の語句を飾ることはあり得ないからです。
⊿彼への誕生日のプレゼント
a birthday present for him
⊿あたしはプレゼントを買うつもりだ。なぜなら、明日は彼の誕生日だからだ。
I will buy a present, for tomorrow is his birthday.

さて、onceにも注意が必要です。頻度の副詞、onceは「1度」とか「一回」の意味です。once upon a timeだと、昔々「ある時に」です。でも、下線部のonceは「いったん～すると」の接続詞です。
⊿一度ルールを覚えてしまえば、このゲームは簡単です。
Once you learn the basic rules, this game is easy.

最後に、この下線部の一番厄介なのがgrantの使い方です。あ、grantは他動詞で使うとgiveとほぼ同じなので、grant＝giveと覚えておくと簡単です。そして、「与える系」の動詞は、「与える＋誰に＋何を」の第4文型か、「与える＋何を＋to誰に」の第3文型を取ります。でも、下線部のgrantは「与える＋to誰に＋何を」の変則的な語順になっています。それに「to誰に」がto the individualになっていて、これがなかなか「その人に」とは訳せない。以上のことを考慮すると、こんな訳文になります。あ、モノ主語は人を主語にして訳し直すのも忘れてはいけません。

「それでも、石が与えてくれる褒賞は危険を冒す価値がある。なぜなら、ひとたび石にキスすれば、その人は雄弁の才を与えられると言われているからです」
