今回はReadingDrill第５回の内容一致問題を解説します。今回も「次の中から本文の内容と一致しないものを１つ選べ」のタイプです。つまり「次のうちどれがベルカントの歌い方の特徴と違うか」ですから、選択肢全部からマーカを抽出しなくてはなりません。こんな具合です。
According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a feature of bel canto singing?
(A) Singing in a light, pretty style.
(B) Singing in a very grand and dramatic style.
(C) Singing low and high notes in the same style.
(D) Singing many different notes rapidly.

各選択肢に共通する語句は、その選択肢独特ではないので、マーカにはなりません。つまり、singing ～styleは３つに登場する名詞ですから、マーカとしては不適切です。歌い方の特徴を比較するのですから、副詞・形容詞に注目します。
１．その設問や選択肢に独特の「名詞」をマーカとして抽出する。
２．特に、「固有名詞」や「数字」は理想的なマーカになる。
３．他の設問にも登場する「名詞」はマーカにならない。
４．１語の「名詞」が抽出できなければ、名詞相当語句（不定詞、動名詞、A of Bなど）をザックリとマーカにする。
５．それでもダメなら確定的な要素（時、場所、条件）をザックリとマーカにする。
６．設問によっては副詞や形容詞をマーカにする。でも動詞はマーカにしない。

マーカを抽出して、それを本文中に探すとこうなります。
Sutherland became famous for singing a particular type of opera called bel canto, which means “beautiful singing” in Italian.  Bel canto operas had been very popular in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but had become largely (ignored) in the twentieth century because the grand, dramatic German operas by Richard Wagner had come to dominate the opera world.  In contrast, the main feature of bel canto is singing in a beautiful, light style.  It requires being able to sing with the same light quality from the bottom to the top of the vocal range, and the ability to sing very fast over many notes.  With intensive training, Sutherland’s voice came to perfectly suit the bel canto style, and she helped bring many almost forgotten bel canto operas back into opera houses around the world.

テーマであるbel canto operasとGerman operasが対比・対照されていることに注意するのが大切です。だって、書いてあるのはbel canto operasの特徴とGerman operasの特徴だからです。特に、「それとは対照的に」の意味のin contrastに注目します。ここで視点がGerman operasからbel canto operasに切りかえられます。

(A)のlightとprettyは、本文中でlightがヒットします。そして、prettyはbeautifulの言い換えだと気がつきます。マーカから左に目をやると「the main feature of bel canto is singing in a beautiful, light style」と書いてますから、(A)はベルカントです。一方(B)のgrandとdramaticは、本文中ではそのままの「the grand, dramatic German operas～」がヒットします。だから(B)はGerman operasです。ということは、(B)がbel cantoの特徴じゃないと分かります。簡単でしょ！ついでに(C)や(D)も確かめておくと「It requires being able to sing with the same light quality from the bottom to the top of the vocal range, and the ability to sing very fast over many notes」のItはbel cantoですから、２つともbel cantoの特徴だと分かります。あ、設問中のthe sameは本文中に必ず出てきます。だから、the sameはとても便利なマーカとして使えます。
