マーカ抽出法講義の第５回目です。今日は残りの選択肢を片付けてしまいます。３ついっぺんにやってしまいましょう。

オ　Bob decided to draw a picture of a cake on his left hand.
カ　Bob wrote what to buy on his gloves when he went shopping.
キ  Bob’s family enjoyed making a cake for Kate’s birthday party.

オはa piece of cakeとleft handの２つ、カはgloves、キはmaking a cakeとKate’s birthday partyの２つをマーカに設定しました。カは前にやったようにwhen he went shoppingをザックリとマーカにしてもかまいません。

¶３　In December, on Kate’s birthday, the children wanted Bob to buy Kate’s birthday cake.  (オ)Bob wrote the word “CAKE” on his left hand and “BIRTHDAY” on his right hand.  Kate and her children were making things for a party and cooking dinner.  When Bob got home, he said, “Oh, no.  Cake.  I forgot it!”  One of his children said, “You didn’t look at your hands.  Why?”  Bob said, “It was very cold outside.  (カ)I was wearing my gloves, so I couldn’t see my hands.  I’m very sorry.”  The children felt very sad.  But Kate was smiling.  She said, “Don’t worry.  Yesterday I bought things to make the cake because I am going to make our Christmas cake this weekend.  Now, let’s make the cake for today’s party!”  Bob was almost crying when he heard her words.

¶４　(キ)They had a good time when they were making the cake and talking in the kitchen.  When they finished cooking, Kate took a picture of the cake.  She said, “Thank you very much for helping me.  This is the most delicious cake in the world.”  She looked very happy.  They sat at the table and Bob said, “Merry Christmas!”  Everyone laughed and began to eat.

オで設定したマーカを探すと、第３段落の第２文でヒットします。選択肢オは「左手にケーキの絵を描いた」だけど、マーカ文の方は「左手にケーキという文字を書いた」とあるので、オは本文の内容と一致しません。

カで設定したマーカは第３段落の第７文でヒットします。選択肢カは「買うものを手袋に書いた」になっているけれど、マーカ文の方は「手袋をはめていたので、手（に書いた文字）が見えなかった」とあるので、カは本文の内容と一致しません。あ、when he went shoppingのマーカは、第１段落の第２文に出てきてしまうので、この問題では役に立たないことが分かります。「選択肢の順番とストーリーの展開の一致」の法則からはずれているからです。

キで設定したマーカを本文中に探すと、第４段落の第１文でヒットします。もう１つのマーカ、Kate’s Birthdayは第３段落の第１文でヒットしますが、その先にすでに選択肢のオとカのマーカ文が確定しているので、キのマーカ文はそのまた先にあるはずだと考えて、マーカのKate’s birthdayは放棄します。この潔さがとっても大切です。だって、「マーカ抽出法」の目的は選択肢の正誤を判断することで、マーカを設定することではありませんからね！それに、第３回でやったことを思い出して欲しいのですが、選択肢の順番とストーリーの展開は絶対に一致すると考えて問題を解いてゆけば良いのです。

各段落のテーマ文が分かるようになると、第３段落も第４段落も両方ともKate’s birthdayのことを扱っていると分かるので、安心してマーカのKate’s birthdayを放棄できるようになります。テーマ文については「英語のロジック」というテーマで３学期に講義する予定です。楽しみにしておいてください。さて、選択肢キのenjoyがマーカ文ではhad a good timeになってるだけで、中身は同じですから本文の内容と一致していると判断できます。

さらに次回から、南山大学の長文問題を「マーカ抽出法」を使って解いてみましょう。南山大学が出題する長文のほとんどが具体性の高い物語文ですから、この「マーカ抽出法」がブリブリ有効に働いて、面白いくらいサクサクと選択肢の正誤が判断できます。河合塾で「南山公開単科ゼミ」をやっていたときも、この「マーカ抽出法」を会得した子がどんどん合格してゆきました。その中には、英語の偏差値が３０～４０くらいの子がたくさんいたのにはビックリしました。
